Grand Forks, North Dakota – Northwest wind gusts could reach 55 mph by midmorning Friday, creating dangerous crosswinds and sudden visibility drops along US-2 and I-29 through early evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Grand Forks, winds will intensify quickly after 9 a.m. Friday, with peak gusts between 50 and 55 mph expected across much of eastern North Dakota and northwest Minnesota. There is a 30 percent chance gusts could exceed 58 mph north of Highway 2. A Wind Advisory remains in effect for much of the region through 7 p.m. Friday.

The strongest winds are expected from late morning through late afternoon. Along I-29 from Grand Forks to Fargo, high-profile vehicles may struggle to maintain lane control, especially in open rural stretches. On US-2 west toward Devils Lake and east into Minnesota, blowing snow may briefly reduce visibility where loose snow remains in fields and ditches.

Communities including Grafton, Hallock and Thief River Falls could see gusts above 50 mph during the midday hours. Near the International Border, localized blowing snow may create sudden whiteout conditions despite limited new snowfall.

Drivers should reduce speed, keep both hands on the wheel and delay travel if operating semitrailers or campers. Secure trash bins and outdoor equipment to prevent wind damage. Isolated power outages are possible if tree limbs contact power lines.

Winds will gradually weaken after sunset Friday, but breezy conditions may linger overnight. Additional statements could be issued if gusts trend higher than expected.
