Springfield, Illinois – Southwest wind gusts up to 35 mph will sweep across central Illinois through early Friday evening, creating critical fire danger west of I-55 and posing hazards for drivers on I-72 and I-55.

According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, a Red Flag Warning remains in effect west of I-55 through 7 p.m. Friday due to a combination of gusty southwest winds between 25 and 35 mph and relative humidity dropping to 20 to 30 percent. Afternoon highs will surge into the upper 60s and near 70 degrees, adding to the rapid drying of grasses and crop fields.

Communities including Jacksonville, Beardstown, Havana and areas toward Quincy face the highest wildfire risk. Any spark from farm equipment, towing chains or discarded cigarettes could ignite fast-moving grass fires. Fire departments across Morgan, Cass and Adams counties remain on alert for rapid fire spread in open fields.

In Springfield, Decatur and Bloomington, winds will still gust near 30 mph, making high-profile vehicles vulnerable on east-west roadways like I-72. Blowing dust may briefly reduce visibility in rural stretches, particularly near freshly tilled farmland.

Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning and postpone activities that could generate sparks. Secure trailer chains, properly dispose of smoking materials and use extreme caution with outdoor equipment. Drivers should keep both hands on the wheel during gusts and watch for sudden crosswinds on overpasses.

A stalled frontal boundary Saturday may bring a slight chance of rain, which could help ease fire concerns. Until then, critical fire weather conditions remain in place through Friday evening, and additional advisories are possible if winds persist.
