Iowa and Illinois are stepping into a windy, springlike surge this morning, but fire danger is rising fast across the Quad Cities. Southwest gusts will build toward 40 mph by midday, and dry air will prime fields and brush for rapid fire spread.

According to the National Weather Service in the Quad Cities, a Red Flag Warning runs from noon until 6 p.m. for parts of southeastern Iowa, western Illinois, and northeast Missouri. Relative humidity may drop as low as 20 percent. Highs climb into the middle 60s in Davenport and Moline, fueled by strong southwest winds of 20 to 30 mph.

Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged. Any spark could spread quickly in open areas. Drivers along I-80, I-74, and Highway 61 may also notice sudden crosswinds, especially on bridges over the Mississippi River.

Saturday turns sharply cooler. Highs fall to around 39 degrees with only a slight chance of light snow north of Interstate 80. By Sunday afternoon and evening, snow chances increase across the Quad Cities. Some accumulation is possible, especially Sunday night, with lows dropping into the lower 20s.

That sharp cooldown raises flash-freeze concerns. Melted moisture from today’s warmth could refreeze on untreated roads and sidewalks. Plan extra time if traveling late Sunday into early Monday.

Monday stays mostly cloudy with highs near 41. A chance of rain develops Monday night, followed by a rain or brief freezing rain risk Tuesday before temperatures rebound into the 40s.

March opens unsettled, but midweek readings climb toward 50 and upper 50s by Thursday. Longer-range trends signal above-normal warmth building into next weekend.
