Georgia – Rain drums on rooftops and water pools along metro Atlanta interstates as commuters step into a wet, gray start to the day. Visibility dips in pockets of fog, and slick pavement along I-75, I-85 and I-285 is slowing the morning drive. This Weather Alert centers on heavy rain falling at rates near 1 inch per hour, triggering flash flooding concerns through 6:30 a.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, a Flash Flood Warning remains in effect for southeastern Cobb, northwestern DeKalb, central Fulton and southern Gwinnett counties. Doppler radar estimates 1 to 2 inches of rain in spots, with minor flooding already reported along Peachtree Creek near Buford Highway. Water levels there have risen above 13 feet, flooding low yards and parks.
Drivers in Marietta, Decatur, Sandy Springs and Norcross should expect standing water on secondary roads. Creeks and underpasses may fill quickly. Turn around if you encounter water across the roadway. Flash flooding often peaks before sunrise but can linger through midmorning.
Showers taper later today, and clouds gradually thin into Saturday. Highs rebound into the upper 60s Saturday and climb into the mid-70s by Sunday under increasing sunshine. Early March opens milder, with highs in the upper 60s to near 70 Monday and pushing toward the 70s midweek. After weeks of winter swings, Spring Vibes are building across Georgia.
Longer-range outlooks hint at above-normal temperatures through next week. For now, stay alert on wet roads and monitor creek levels. Traveling later today? Let us know what you’re seeing on the roads.
