Omaha, Nebraska – A brief spark could turn into a fast-moving grass fire by late Friday morning as powerful northwest winds and extremely dry air sweep across northeast Nebraska.
According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, a Red Flag Warning is in effect from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday for Knox, Cedar, Antelope, Pierce, Wayne and Thurston counties. Northwest winds will increase to 15 to 20 mph, with gusts up to 35 mph. Relative humidity will drop as low as 17 to 18 percent, drying fine fuels and crop residue rapidly.
Communities including Norfolk, Wayne, Pierce, Neligh, Hartington and Pender sit within the highest-risk corridor during peak afternoon winds. Open fields, roadside ditches and areas with dormant vegetation could see flames spread quickly if ignited.
Fire officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning and postpone activities that could create sparks. Secure trailer chains, avoid parking vehicles over dry grass and properly dispose of cigarettes. Under these conditions, containment becomes difficult once a fire starts.
Winds will begin easing after 6 p.m., but any fire that ignites before sunset could spread rapidly across multiple properties. Additional fire weather alerts could follow if dry conditions persist into the weekend.
