Chicago, Ill. – Gusts up to 35 mph and unusually dry air could allow any spark to spread quickly across northern Illinois Friday afternoon, putting communities along I-90, I-55 and I-94 at heightened risk for fast-moving grass and brush fires.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, a combination of unseasonably warm temperatures, low relative humidity and southwest winds of 30 to 35 mph will peak during the afternoon hours Friday. The most critical window runs from noon until 7 p.m., when dry fuels and stronger gusts could accelerate fire growth across Cook, DuPage, Lake and Will counties.

Temperatures will climb into the upper 50s and lower 60s, further drying dormant vegetation along roadways and open fields. Areas near US-41 and I-80 may see the strongest gusts, especially in exposed locations. Any discarded cigarette, dragging trailer chain or spark from farm equipment could ignite grass and spread flames rapidly.

Local fire departments urge residents to avoid outdoor burning and postpone activities that create open flames. Drivers should avoid parking vehicles on dry grass and remain alert for smoke that could reduce visibility along major corridors, including I-294 and the Tri-State Tollway.

Conditions will ease after sunset as winds gradually diminish, but elevated fire danger will persist through early evening. Residents should monitor official updates and be prepared for possible local restrictions if fires develop during peak wind hours Friday.
