Boston, Mass. – Temperatures are set to plunge into the teens overnight, raising the risk of black ice on I-93, I-95 and the Massachusetts Turnpike before the Friday morning commute begins.

According to the National Weather Service in Boston, skies will remain clear and winds light, allowing temperatures to fall rapidly after sunset. Overnight lows will range from 15 to 19 degrees across much of eastern Massachusetts, with mid-20s closer to the immediate South Coast and Cape Cod. The sharp drop will refreeze any leftover moisture on bridges and elevated roadways by 6 a.m. Friday.

Communities including Boston, Cambridge, Quincy and Lowell can expect a cold start, with wind chills in the teens during the early commute. State transportation crews will monitor high-traffic corridors such as Route 1 and I-90 for isolated slick spots, particularly on overpasses. Drivers should reduce speed, increase following distance and allow extra travel time through mid-morning.

Sunshine returns statewide Friday, helping temperatures rebound into the lower 40s by midafternoon. Light winds will limit additional travel concerns, and road conditions should improve quickly after 10 a.m. Western Massachusetts cities such as Springfield and Pittsfield will see similar clearing with seasonable highs near 40 degrees.

Residents should dress in layers for the early chill and check on vulnerable neighbors. While quiet weather closes out the workweek, the freeze risk remains in place until midmorning Friday. Additional updates will be issued if any advisories become necessary.
