St. Louis, Missouri-Illinois Border – Drivers along I-70, I-64 and I-55 could encounter snow-covered lanes by 6 a.m. Sunday as a developing winter system pushes toward the Mississippi River, bringing a 30 to 50 percent chance of at least 2 inches of accumulation before 6 a.m. Monday.

According to the National Weather Service, the highest probabilities for 2 inches or more currently stretch from central and eastern Missouri into west-central and southern Illinois. The corridor includes St. Louis, Columbia, Jefferson City and extends east toward Belleville, Effingham and Centralia. Snow is expected to develop late Saturday night and intensify at times through Sunday, especially during the morning and midday travel window.

If moderate snowfall rates materialize, visibility could fall below one mile and untreated roadways may turn slushy quickly. Elevated surfaces such as bridges over the Mississippi River and interchanges along I-255 and I-270 are most susceptible to early accumulation.

MoDOT and IDOT crews are monitoring pavement temperatures and preparing equipment in advance of potential Sunday impacts. Even minor shifts in the storm track could move the heavier snow band north toward Quincy or south toward Cape Girardeau.

Residents should limit non-essential travel during periods of steady snow, check tire conditions and allow extra stopping distance. Winter weather advisories may be issued as early as Saturday if confidence continues to increase in snowfall totals and placement through early Monday.
