Louisville, Kentucky – Kentuckians should prepare for multiple rounds of steady rain March 5-11 that could push rivers higher and create water-covered roads during peak travel hours.

According to the National Weather Service Climate Prediction Center, Kentucky falls within a 60 to 70 percent chance of above-normal precipitation during the March 5-11 period. At the same time, the state carries a 90 to 100 percent chance of well above-normal temperatures, signaling a warm and moisture-rich pattern across the Ohio and Tennessee valleys.

In Louisville, Lexington, Bowling Green and Owensboro, most precipitation will fall as rain, with periods of moderate to heavy downpours possible. Warmer air will dominate, reducing any meaningful risk of snow and allowing runoff to move quickly into streams and rivers.

Heavier rainfall could lead to ponding along Interstates 64, 65 and 75, especially in low-lying stretches and urban areas with poor drainage. The Ohio, Kentucky and Green rivers may see noticeable rises if repeated bands track across the same counties.

Residents should clear gutters and storm drains, secure outdoor items and avoid driving through flooded roadways. The wet pattern remains active through March 11, and additional flood advisories could be issued if rainfall totals increase.
