Chicago, Illinois – A burst of 60-degree warmth and 35 mph wind gusts will sweep across the I-90 corridor by 4 p.m. Friday, creating elevated fire danger before colder air and snow chances return this weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, southwest winds will strengthen late Friday morning and peak during the afternoon, with gusts reaching up to 35 mph across Cook, DuPage and Will counties. High temperatures will climb into the low and mid-60s, running well above late-February averages. The combination of mild air, dry grasses and gusty winds may increase the risk of brush fires, particularly along open stretches near I-55 and I-294.
Officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning and properly discard smoking materials. Drivers of high-profile vehicles should also prepare for crosswinds, especially on north-south roadways.
Conditions shift quickly Saturday as a cold front moves through the region. Temperatures will fall into the 30s by afternoon, and scattered snow showers may develop, mainly north of I-88 by early evening. While widespread heavy accumulation is not expected at this time, brief snow bursts could reduce visibility and create slick patches on untreated roads.
By Sunday morning, lows will dip into the teens and 20s, marking a temperature drop of more than 30 degrees from Friday’s peak. Any moisture left on bridges and overpasses, including along Lake Shore Drive, could refreeze.
Residents should monitor updates through Saturday night as additional advisories may be issued if snow coverage expands or winds intensify.
