St. Louis, Missouri – Wind gusts up to 35 mph could turn a single spark into a fast-moving grass fire by midday Friday, especially along I-44 and I-64 where dry vegetation lines the shoulders. With humidity dropping and dormant winter grasses ready to ignite, conditions favor rapid fire spread during the afternoon commute.

According to the National Weather Service in St. Louis, low relative humidity combined with gusty southwest winds will create elevated fire danger across eastern Missouri through Friday evening. Wind speeds between 25 and 35 mph are expected during peak heating hours, allowing flames to move quickly across open fields and potentially jump rural highways.

Communities including Columbia, Jefferson City, Farmington and Rolla face similar risks along I-70, US-50 and US-67. Any discarded cigarette, dragging trailer chain or spark from outdoor equipment could ignite roadside grass and spread within minutes under strong gusts. Fire crews may encounter erratic fire behavior due to shifting wind speeds.

Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning and delay debris fires. Secure trailer chains, properly dispose of smoking materials and use extreme caution with machinery that produces heat or sparks. Farmers working open fields should keep water sources nearby and monitor equipment closely.

Winds are expected to ease after sunset Friday, gradually lowering the immediate fire threat. However, dry conditions remain in place, and additional statements or local burn restrictions could follow if fires develop during the day.
