Detroit, Mich. – Drivers across southeast Michigan have a narrow window Friday to prepare for a sharp weekend cooldown that could send temperatures tumbling more than 25 degrees and create slick stretches on I-75, I-94 and I-96 by early Sunday morning.

Highs will surge into the low to mid-50s Friday under dry skies, accelerating snowmelt and leaving pavement damp in spots. That warmth will not last. A cold front pushes through Saturday, bringing a developing chance of light snow toward evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Detroit/Pontiac, snow chances increase Saturday night, with probabilities ranging between 40 and 60 percent across portions of Metro Detroit. While significant accumulation is not expected at this time, falling temperatures into the teens and 20s overnight could allow light snow to stick on untreated surfaces.

Elevated roadways including I-696 overpasses, the Lodge Freeway and connectors along M-59 are most vulnerable to freezing first. Gusty winds behind the front may also lower wind chills into the teens by Sunday morning, reinforcing icy patches during early travel hours.

Highs Sunday will struggle to reach 30 degrees, a sharp contrast from Friday’s warmth. Drivers should monitor pavement conditions, reduce speeds Saturday night and allow extra braking distance if snow develops.

Colder conditions will persist into early next week with highs remaining in the 20s and low 30s. Additional advisories could be issued if snow coverage expands Saturday night across the Detroit metro.
