Pittsburgh, Pa. – Drivers across western Pennsylvania have a narrow window Thursday morning to prepare for two incoming snow chances that could slow traffic on I-376, I-79 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike before early next week’s commute. Warmer air will briefly push temperatures into the 40s and low 50s Friday and Saturday, but that break will not last.

According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, the first round of light snow develops late Saturday night and could linger into early Sunday morning, with precipitation chances near 50 percent. While accumulation looks minor, overnight lows in the teens and 20s mean untreated bridges and overpasses on I-279, Route 28 and Parkway East could turn slick before sunrise Sunday.

The second system arrives Monday and carries a higher impact risk. Forecasters place precipitation chances above 50 percent, with the potential for a rain-to-snow transition as colder air filters in. That timing raises concern for icy stretches along I-70 and elevated ramps connecting to the PA Turnpike, especially before 6 a.m. Tuesday.

PennDOT crews will monitor pavement temperatures, but drivers should plan for reduced speeds during early morning hours and allow extra braking distance. Keep phones charged, top off windshield fluid and check tire tread before the weekend.

Temperatures fall back into the 20s and 30s Monday and Tuesday, reinforcing the freeze-thaw cycle. Additional advisories may be issued if track or intensity shifts. Residents should monitor updated statements through the weekend as winter remains active across the Pittsburgh region.
