Juneau, Alaska – Snow-covered roads and dropping temperatures are creating hazardous travel conditions across Southeast Alaska tonight, with several communities expecting up to 7 inches before conditions improve Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service in Juneau, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 6 a.m. AKST Thursday for the City and Borough of Juneau, where an additional 3 to 5 inches of snow is expected. Temperatures have fallen into the upper 20s, allowing snow to accumulate quickly on untreated roads and bridges.

Farther south, Sitka and Prince of Wales Island, including Craig, Klawock, Hydaburg and Thorne Bay, remain under a Winter Weather Advisory until 4 p.m. Thursday. Total snow accumulations of 4 to 7 inches are forecast, with wind gusts up to 35 mph causing blowing snow and reduced visibility. Cape Fairweather to Lisianski Strait, including Elfin Cove and Pelican, could see 4 to 7 inches before 6 a.m. Thursday.

Snow totals will vary widely, with some neighborhoods picking up a few inches more or less depending on heavier bands. Drivers should slow down and check 511.alaska.gov for the latest road conditions.

Snow showers will gradually taper later Thursday, but slick spots may linger as temperatures remain below freezing.
