Seattle, Washington – Snow stacking up to a foot in the Cascades is creating hazardous mountain travel tonight, with difficult driving conditions expected through 4 a.m. Friday.
According to the National Weather Service in Seattle, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for the Cascades of Whatcom and Skagit counties, including Mount Baker, where total snow accumulations could reach 12 inches. Winds may gust as high as 35 mph, producing blowing snow and reduced visibility at times.
Farther south, the Cascades of Snohomish and Northern King counties, including Stevens Pass, could see up to 10 inches of snow through early Friday. Snowfall at pass level is expected to range between 4 and 6 inches, with higher totals in the surrounding backcountry.
Snow-covered roads may lead to delays and temporary closures along State Route 20 and U.S. Highway 2 near Stevens Pass. Gusty winds could also bring down tree branches and cause isolated power outages.
Drivers heading into the mountains should carry chains, slow down and prepare for changing conditions. Snow will gradually taper before daybreak Friday, but slick conditions may persist across higher elevations.
