Assaria, Kansas – A moderate earthquake shook parts of central Kansas on Wednesday afternoon, registering a magnitude 3.5 just east of Assaria.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake occurred at 2:14 p.m. Central Time at a depth of 9.1 kilometers. The epicenter was located about 5 kilometers east of Assaria in Saline County, northwest of Salina.
At magnitude 3.5, shaking is often noticeable indoors, especially near the epicenter. Residents in and around Assaria and Salina may have felt brief vibrations or a rolling sensation. Light shaking reports were submitted through the USGS community intensity system.
No immediate reports of damage or injuries have been confirmed. Earthquakes of this size rarely cause structural damage but can rattle windows and unsettle unsecured objects.
Kansas experiences occasional seismic activity, though events above magnitude 3.0 are less common than in neighboring Oklahoma. Officials continue to monitor for aftershocks, though none have been reported as of Wednesday afternoon.
