Des Moines, Iowa – Drivers across central Iowa should prepare now for slick roads by late Sunday as accumulating snow moves in Sunday night, March 1st, with the highest travel impact risk centered from Des Moines southward.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, a larger storm system Sunday into Monday carries a 30 to 40 percent probability of minor travel impacts across central to southern Iowa. Snow is expected to develop Sunday afternoon, becoming steadier Sunday night and continuing into early Monday morning. Northern Iowa may see lighter accumulations, but the greater risk for accumulating snow stretches along and south of the I-80 corridor.

In central Iowa, including Des Moines, Ames, Newton and Marshalltown, roads such as I-35 and I-80 could become snow-covered overnight Sunday. Reduced visibility and slick bridges may affect the Monday morning commute. Farther south toward Ottumwa and Creston, snowfall probabilities are higher, increasing the likelihood of slushy highways and slower travel.

Forecasters note that exact snowfall totals and storm track remain uncertain and will be refined over the coming days. A wintry mix is possible near the Missouri border at times.

Residents should monitor updated advisories, check Iowa DOT road conditions before traveling and allow extra time for Monday morning plans. Additional winter weather headlines may be issued as confidence increases heading into the weekend.
