DES MOINES, Iowa – Snow that began in northwest Iowa is expected to spread southeast across central Iowa through Wednesday evening, with a narrow corridor of 1 to 2 inches likely from Fort Dodge to Grinnell and travel disruptions possible during the evening commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Des Moines, snow has already started in northwest Iowa and will continue tracking southeast across the state’s central counties through this evening. Forecasters said the most impactful accumulation is expected in a narrow band where 1 to 2 inches are more likely, generally lining up from the Fort Dodge area down toward Grinnell.

Outside that corridor, the weather service said smaller totals are expected, though conditions can vary quickly over short distances as the band shifts. Even a modest burst of snow can create slick stretches, particularly on untreated roads, bridges and ramps.

The National Weather Service said drivers should plan for longer travel times during the Wednesday evening commute, especially in communities that fall under the 1- to 2-inch band. Visibility may drop at times as snow rates increase, and minor accumulations can still cause slowdowns where traffic is heavy.

Forecasters also noted that freezing drizzle will be possible in southern parts of Iowa, which can create difficult-to-see slick spots even where snowfall amounts are lower.

Residents are urged to use caution while traveling Wednesday afternoon and evening, reduce speed on snow-covered roads and allow extra stopping distance. Motorists should also be prepared for changing conditions as the snow continues to move southeast into tonight.

For commuters, the timing could coincide with the busiest travel period of the day, increasing the likelihood of delays on primary routes through central Iowa.
