CHICAGO, Ill. — Parts of northern Illinois and northwest Indiana could see light snow Wednesday night south of a Peru-to-Lafayette corridor before a milder, mostly dry stretch settles in through Friday, with colder air and renewed snow chances returning this weekend, according to the National Weather Service office in Chicago.

The agency said in a Wednesday afternoon outlook that the best chance for snow tonight is mainly south of a line from Peru, Illinois, to Lafayette, Indiana, with 20% to 30% odds indicated. Elsewhere, dry conditions are expected to dominate into the end of the workweek.

Thursday is forecast to be seasonably mild with highs around 41 to 47 and overnight lows 28 to 33, the weather service said. A sharper warmup arrives Friday, with windy conditions and highs projected at 58 to 63, while lows hold in the 26 to 33 range.

The weekend brings a noticeable change. Saturday’s outlook calls for colder temperatures, with highs 33 to 48 and lows 15 to 25, along with a chance of snow that the weather service said is focused mainly north of Interstate 80. By Sunday, highs are expected to run 29 to 35 with lows 17 to 23, and the agency flagged a chance of accumulating snow.

For commuters and weekend travelers, the timing matters: most areas should see easier driving conditions Thursday and Friday, but periodic snow chances and falling temperatures this weekend could create slick spots, especially overnight and early morning. Drivers should watch for changing conditions near and north of I-80 on Saturday and monitor updated forecasts for Sunday’s accumulating-snow potential.
