Seattle, WA – Up to 12 inches of snow will pile up in the North Cascades, creating slick mountain roads and the risk of temporary closures through early Friday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Seattle, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for the Cascades of Whatcom and Skagit counties, including Mount Baker, until 4 a.m. PST Friday. Snow totals could reach a foot at higher elevations, with wind gusts up to 35 mph producing blowing snow and reduced visibility.

Travelers heading toward Mount Baker or along high-elevation routes in eastern Whatcom and Skagit counties should expect snow-covered pavement and periods of difficult driving, especially during heavier bursts. Blowing snow may briefly lower visibility, and gusty winds could snap small tree branches, raising the chance of isolated power outages.

Drivers should slow down, increase following distance and check Washington State Department of Transportation updates before departing. Carry chains and emergency supplies if traveling through the passes.

Snow showers taper late Thursday night, but icy spots may linger into Friday morning as temperatures dip. Additional advisories are possible if snowfall rates increase.
