Buffalo, NY – Snow is already coating roads across Oswego and Lewis counties, and heavier lake effect bands will redevelop tonight, creating slick travel for both the Wednesday evening and Thursday morning commutes. Drivers along the Tug Hill Plateau could see a combined 4 to 9 inches before snow tapers near daybreak Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Oswego and Lewis counties until 7 a.m. Thursday. An additional 2 to 4 inches is expected today across higher elevations of the Tug Hill, followed by localized lake effect snow tonight that could drop another 2 to 5 inches in persistent bands.

In Oswego County, Route 104 and stretches of Interstate 81 may see rapidly changing visibility as bands shift inland from Lake Ontario. Across Lewis County, especially near Lowville and the higher terrain of Tug Hill, snowfall rates could briefly top an inch per hour overnight, leading to snow-covered roads and reduced visibility under a half-mile.

Motorists should slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and be prepared for sudden whiteouts. Keep phones charged and winter gear in vehicles in case of delays.

Advisories remain in effect through early Thursday, and additional lake effect alerts could be issued if bands intensify.
