Newport, North Carolina – Rain chances will increase to 70 percent across eastern North Carolina on Friday, bringing cool and wet conditions along U.S. Highway 70 and U.S. Highway 17 before improving weather arrives Sunday.
According to the US National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City, widespread rain is expected Friday with afternoon highs near 55 degrees inland and between 50 and 55 degrees along the beaches. Periods of steady rainfall could create ponding on roadways and reduced visibility during peak travel times.
Communities including Morehead City, New Bern, Jacksonville and Greenville may experience damp conditions throughout much of the day Friday. Motorists traveling along US-70, NC-24 and US-17 should allow extra stopping distance on wet pavement.
Rain chances decrease to around 40 percent Saturday, with scattered morning showers possible before gradual clearing. Temperatures will moderate, with inland highs climbing into the 60 to 65 degree range and coastal areas reaching the mid-50s.
By Sunday, drier air moves into the region, bringing the warmest day of the weekend. Inland highs are forecast between 65 and 70 degrees, while beaches warm into the mid to upper 50s. Improved conditions are expected to support outdoor activities and smoother travel across major corridors.
While no severe weather is anticipated, commuters and beach-area visitors may encounter slick roads Friday and early Saturday.
Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts for refined rainfall timing and amounts as the weekend approaches.
