Hastings, Nebraska – Mild temperatures and periods of rain across south-central Nebraska today will transition to colder conditions and a chance of snow by Sunday, affecting travel along U.S. Highway 281 and Interstate 80.
According to the US National Weather Service in Hastings, daytime highs Wednesday are expected to reach between 50 and 71 degrees across the region, with rain showers developing at times. Overnight lows will fall into the 20s and 30s before another round of mild afternoons Thursday and Friday.
Temperatures Thursday are forecast in the upper 50s to upper 60s, followed by highs in the mid-60s to low 70s Friday. Cities including Hastings, Grand Island and Kearney could see some of the warmest readings before the pattern shifts.
By Saturday, cooler air begins filtering into the area, with highs ranging from the 40s to near 60 degrees. The more noticeable change arrives Sunday, when daytime highs are projected to drop into the low 30s to mid-40s. Forecasters indicate precipitation could transition to snow as colder air deepens across the state.
While snowfall amounts remain uncertain, any snow developing Sunday could create slick spots on bridges and overpasses, especially along I-80, U.S. 281 and Nebraska Highway 6.
Commuters and agricultural operators should prepare for changing conditions after several mild days, particularly if traveling late weekend.
Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts as the timing and intensity of the colder air and potential snowfall become clearer.
