Kansas City, Missouri – Light rain will overspread the Kansas City region tonight, with up to a 40 percent chance of freezing drizzle near the Interstate 35 corridor close to the Iowa border, potentially creating slick spots on elevated roadways.

According to the US National Weather Service in Kansas City, most of northwest and central Missouri can expect light rain or scattered showers through the evening and overnight hours. Farther north, including areas near St. Joseph, Maryville and Kirksville, temperatures may support a transition to light rain and snow mix or patchy freezing drizzle before precipitation tapers.

Forecasters say any icing would be light and brief, but even minor glaze accumulation can affect bridges and overpasses along I-35, U.S. Highway 71 and U.S. Highway 36. Motorists traveling late tonight should reduce speeds and allow additional stopping distance.

Looking ahead to Sunday evening and overnight, additional rounds of precipitation are possible. Forecast models indicate varying precipitation types, including rain and potential wintry mix, depending on temperature profiles. While it will not rain continuously, precipitation chances rise into the 50 to 60 percent range at times across portions of the Kansas City metro and surrounding counties.

The unsettled pattern may continue into early next week, with periodic precipitation chances lingering through midweek. Timing and exact precipitation types remain subject to change.

Commuters, delivery drivers and college students traveling along I-70 and I-35 late Sunday could encounter changing road conditions if wintry precipitation develops.

Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts and check road conditions before extended travel.
