Juneau, Alaska – Snow is ramping up across Southeast Alaska, and roads in Juneau could become nearly impassable before daybreak Thursday as up to 10 inches of accumulation piles up.
According to the National Weather Service in Juneau, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for the City and Borough of Juneau until 6 a.m. Thursday, with an additional 4 to 10 inches expected. Snow will intensify Wednesday morning and continue through Wednesday night, creating hazardous travel for both the evening commute and early Thursday drivers.
Across Sitka and Prince of Wales Island, including Craig, Klawock and Hydaburg, 4 to 7 inches of snow are expected from 6 p.m. Wednesday until 4 p.m. Thursday. Wind gusts could reach 35 mph, leading to blowing snow and sharply reduced visibility. Snow totals will vary widely, with west- to southwest-facing slopes favored for higher amounts.
Farther north, Skagway and White Pass could see 4 to 6 inches by 9 p.m. Wednesday, with the highest totals along the Klondike Highway. From Cape Fairweather to Lisianski Strait, including Pelican and Elfin Cove, 4 to 7 inches are likely through early Thursday morning.
Travel is discouraged during heavier bursts. Drivers should slow down, allow extra stopping distance and check 511.alaska.gov for the latest road conditions. Advisories remain in effect through Thursday morning and afternoon, and additional updates are possible as snow showers continue.
