Marquette, Michigan – Drivers across Upper Michigan have just hours to prepare as lake effect snow continues to sweep across the region, reducing visibility and coating roads ahead of the evening commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 7 p.m. Wednesday for Keweenaw, Northern Houghton, Alger, Luce and Northern Schoolcraft counties. Additional snowfall will range up to 2 inches across the Keweenaw Peninsula, including Houghton and Hancock, with up to 4 inches east of Munising toward Grand Marais and Newberry. Wind gusts could reach 35 mph, creating patchy blowing snow and sudden drops in visibility.
Heavier lake effect bands are expected along and north of M-28, especially east of Munising. In the most intense bursts, snowfall rates may exceed half an inch per hour. Roads including US-41 through Houghton County and stretches of M-28 could become snow covered quickly, particularly on bridges and exposed areas.
The hazardous conditions will impact both the Wednesday morning and evening commutes. Motorists should slow down, allow extra travel time and keep headlights on during periods of heavier snow. Blowing snow may briefly reduce visibility below a quarter mile in open areas near Lake Superior.
The advisory remains in place through early Wednesday evening, and additional updates are possible if snow bands intensify.
