Leadville, Colorado – Wind-driven snow continues across the Sawatch and Mosquito ranges, creating slick mountain travel conditions tonight.

According to the National Weather Service in Pueblo, blowing snow, poor visibility, and snowpacked roads are expected across portions of Chaffee and Lake counties. Forecasters say snowfall will persist through this evening, with the heaviest impacts north of Cottonwood Pass.

Between 5 and 10 inches of wind-driven snow is possible, especially in higher elevations near Leadville and along US-24. Winds could gust as high as 70 mph, causing drifting snow and rapidly changing road conditions.

A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from midnight through midnight Wednesday night for impacted mountain zones, including areas near Buena Vista and Salida. Additional snowfall today and tonight may create hazardous stretches along US-50 and surrounding mountain passes.

Travelers are urged to check conditions at cotrip.org before departing. Blowing snow may reduce visibility suddenly, particularly in exposed and elevated areas.

Mountain commuters, college students, and ski traffic could experience delays during evening and early Wednesday travel windows.

Drivers should allow extra stopping distance and prepare for potential closures if conditions worsen.

The advisory area includes portions of the Sawatch Range and Mosquito Range, where snowfall rates and strong winds may combine to create brief whiteout conditions.

Updates are available through the National Weather Service Pueblo and Colorado Department of Transportation.
