Columbia, South Carolina – Wind gusts over 30 mph and 0.5 inches of rain could impact Columbia travel through Friday.

According to the US National Weather Service Columbia, a cold front is approaching the Midlands today, bringing breezy conditions across the region. Gusts are expected to exceed 30 mph at times, creating crosswind concerns for high-profile vehicles along I-26, I-20 and I-77.

Forecasters say the front will slowly cross the area Thursday and Friday, stalling as multiple waves of low pressure move through. That pattern is expected to produce widespread showers with at least a half-inch of rainfall, with totals extending into Saturday.

Rain chances increase significantly Thursday and Friday across Columbia, Augusta and Orangeburg, with precipitation coverage becoming widespread. While severe weather is not currently indicated, steady rainfall and gusty winds may reduce visibility and create slick pavement during peak commute hours.

Drivers traveling through downtown Columbia, the I-26/I-20 interchange and along I-77 toward Blythewood should prepare for slower travel, especially during heavier showers.

The National Weather Service said breezy conditions will continue throughout Wednesday before rainfall becomes the primary concern late week. Temperatures were not highlighted as extreme, but changing conditions may affect outdoor work schedules and after-school activities.

Students at the University of South Carolina and commuters across the Central Savannah River Area may want to monitor updated forecasts as rainfall timing becomes clearer.

Additional updates are expected as the front progresses through the Midlands into Saturday.
