Maine’s northern woods are locked in an Arctic grip this morning as thermometers in Caribou sit at 0 degrees under a pale winter sky. Wind chills have dipped near -11, biting at any exposed skin and stiffening freshly fallen snow along Route 1.
According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, snow will increase through the afternoon with a 70 percent chance of precipitation. Daytime accumulation is expected to remain under an inch, but even light snowfall can quickly coat untreated roads at these temperatures. Winds may gust near 20 mph, blowing snow across open fields and reducing visibility at times.
Drivers should plan extra travel time, especially on rural roads and secondary highways. With highs only reaching 27 degrees, little melting will occur. Any compacted snow will turn hard and slick by evening. As skies partially clear tonight and temperatures fall toward 19, refreezing will make surfaces icy.
Thursday brings another chance of light snow with highs near 33. Skies clear Thursday night, and temperatures plunge toward 5 degrees. Friday stays mostly sunny but colder again, with highs near 28.
A modest weekend warmup arrives Saturday as highs climb near 40 with a chance of rain and snow showers. Sunday turns sharply colder again, with highs near 17 and another chance of snow. Early next week remains frigid before gradual moderation develops toward early March.
