Columbus, Ohio – Light snow showers are producing a quick coating on roads across central Ohio early Wednesday, creating slick travel conditions along I-70 and I-71 through 6 a.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, a band of snow showers moved through the region before dawn, depositing a light accumulation on roadways with temperatures hovering near freezing.
The Special Weather Statement remains in effect until 6 a.m. EST. Forecasters warn that even minor snowfall amounts may create slippery spots, especially on bridges, overpasses and untreated secondary roads.
Traffic cameras near SR-161 and SR-37 showed snow-covered shoulders and partially coated lanes during the early morning hours. Visibility may briefly drop in heavier snow showers, leading to rapid changes in driving conditions.
Communities including Columbus, Newark, Lancaster, Springfield and Chillicothe are within the impacted area. Primary travel corridors such as Interstate 70, Interstate 71, Interstate 77, US-23 and US-33 may experience patchy slick conditions during the morning commute.
Officials urge drivers to slow down, increase following distance and allow extra travel time. Conditions may vary significantly over short distances depending on snowfall intensity.
While widespread closures are not anticipated, untreated roads could remain slick until temperatures rise above freezing later this morning.
Commuters, school transportation services and early-shift workers should remain alert for changing visibility and snow-covered pavement through the pre-dawn hours.
Residents are encouraged to monitor updates from the National Weather Service Wilmington office for the latest information.
