Naples, Florida – Dense smoke from the ongoing National Fire in Collier County may create dangerous driving conditions along I-75 through 9 a.m. Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Miami, smoke from the fire burning just south of Interstate 75, also known as Alligator Alley, may settle close to the ground overnight due to light winds and a stable atmosphere.
Forecasters warn that reduced visibility could develop in the vicinity of the fire and along roadways to the south, particularly during the pre-dawn and early morning hours. Conditions may change rapidly, with clear stretches followed by sudden drops in visibility.
The greatest concern is along Interstate 75 in Collier County, including areas near Golden Gate, Naples and Immokalee. Portions of US-41 could also experience localized visibility reductions if smoke drifts west or south.
The advisory is in effect now through 9 a.m. Wednesday, when daytime heating and improved atmospheric mixing are expected to help disperse smoke.
Drivers traveling early Wednesday should slow down, use low-beam headlights in smoky areas and allow extra distance between vehicles. Sudden visibility drops can increase the risk of crashes, particularly for commuters and commercial traffic along I-75.
Officials emphasize caution when encountering smoke on roadways and urge motorists to remain alert for changing conditions.
