Navarro, California – Flood warnings remain in effect as the Navarro, Russian and Eel rivers rise above flood stage, closing Highway 128 and impacting key roadways across Mendocino and Humboldt counties through Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Eureka, the Navarro River near Navarro has already exceeded flood stage and is expected to crest around 26.5 feet before falling below flood stage Wednesday morning. Flooding is occurring along Highway 128 approximately five miles east of Highway 1, and the roadway is closed between Highway 1 and Flynn Creek Bridge.
Further inland, the Russian River near Hopland remains above flood stage and is forecast to crest near 18.6 feet around 2 a.m. Wednesday before receding later in the morning. Flooding is impacting Highway 175 at the Russian River Bridge, as well as low-lying roads near Highway 222 around Ukiah, Hopland and Talmage.
In Humboldt County, the Eel River at Fernbridge is forecast to crest near 23.4 feet early Wednesday morning. Moderate flooding is expected, including impacts to Highway 211 south of Fernbridge and portions of the Eel Delta, Cannibal Island Road and low-lying agricultural areas.
Officials warn that most flood-related fatalities occur in vehicles. Drivers are urged not to enter flooded roadways and to follow posted closures. “Turn Around, Don’t Drown” remains the official safety guidance.
Commuters, delivery drivers and early-shift workers along Highways 128, 175, 211 and 222 should prepare for detours and possible additional closures through Wednesday afternoon as rivers gradually recede.
