La Crosse, Wisconsin – Drivers across western Wisconsin and southeast Minnesota face slick roads this afternoon as pockets of freezing rain move southeast, creating sudden icy stretches before the system exits by mid-afternoon Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 3 p.m. Tuesday for Winona and Houston counties in Minnesota and for La Crosse, Vernon and Trempealeau counties in Wisconsin. Mixed precipitation, including light freezing rain, is producing slippery roadways and brief icy patches.

Communities including La Crosse, Viroqua, Arcadia, Whitehall, Caledonia and Winona are seeing occasional glaze on untreated surfaces. Bridges, overpasses and rural roads are most vulnerable as temperatures hover near freezing. Even light icing can cause vehicles to slide, especially during braking.

Motorists traveling along Interstate 90, Highway 14 and Highway 61 should reduce speed and allow extra stopping distance. Officials urge drivers to check conditions before heading out by visiting 511mn.org in Minnesota or 511wi.gov in Wisconsin.

Precipitation will continue pushing southeast and taper off by 3 p.m., but lingering slick spots may persist into the late afternoon where freezing rain briefly coated pavement. Additional updates will be issued if temperatures drop again this evening.
