Green Bay, Wisconsin – Snow is falling at up to 1 inch per hour across northeastern Wisconsin this afternoon, creating slick highways and sudden drops in visibility just as drivers head out for the Tuesday commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Green Bay, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 3 p.m. Tuesday for Northern Marinette, Forest and Florence counties, where total snowfall between 1 and 3 inches is expected. In Door County, including Sturgeon Bay, Fish Creek and Sister Bay, the advisory continues until 6 p.m., with 1 to 4 inches of accumulation and wind gusts reaching 35 mph.

The heaviest bursts are producing snowfall rates of one-half to one inch per hour for stretches of two to four hours. Gusty winds are blowing snow across open roadways, lowering visibility and making travel difficult on highways such as U.S. 41, Highway 42 and Highway 57.

Door County faces the greatest concern into the evening as blowing snow may significantly reduce visibility during peak travel hours. Slippery pavement and drifting snow could quickly cover treated roads.

Drivers should slow down, allow extra stopping distance and check 511 for the latest road conditions. Snow will taper from west to east later this afternoon, but slick spots may linger into the evening commute, especially in lakeshore communities.
