Binghamton, NY – Drivers across Northern Oneida County have less than 12 hours before steady overnight snowfall begins coating Route 12 and secondary roads, with plow crews preparing for up to 8 inches by daybreak Thursday.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from 1 a.m. Wednesday until 7 a.m. Thursday for Northern Oneida County, including Boonville. Forecasters expect widespread snow to develop after midnight, producing total accumulations between 4 and 8 inches. The heaviest bursts are likely during the Wednesday morning commute, with additional snow showers redeveloping late Wednesday afternoon.
This system begins as a fast-moving clipper tonight, spreading steady snow across central New York before tapering to scattered showers midday. Another round of snow is expected Wednesday evening as a cold front sweeps through, triggering lake-effect bands that could redeposit snow on already slick roads overnight.
Travel conditions may deteriorate quickly, especially on untreated rural highways and elevated surfaces. Slower speeds and increased stopping distances will be critical. State officials urge motorists to check 511 for the latest road conditions and allow extra time for both the morning and evening commutes Wednesday.
Snow showers may linger into early Thursday before tapering, but additional advisories could follow if lake-effect bands intensify.
