Petoskey, MI – Drivers across northern Michigan could encounter slick highways and reduced visibility before sunset as steady snow spreads across the region through midnight Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until midnight EST tonight for portions of eastern Upper and northern Lower Michigan. Areas including Emmet, Cheboygan, Presque Isle and Charlevoix counties, along with Mackinac Island, Bois Blanc Island and Beaver Island, can expect 2 to 4 inches of snow. Farther south in Alpena, Antrim, Montmorency and Otsego counties, totals will range from 1 to 3 inches.

Snow will continue through the evening commute, creating slippery stretches on US-31, I-75, M-32 and M-68. Bridges and untreated secondary roads may ice over first as temperatures hover near freezing. Island communities could see travel delays on ferries and local roadways as snow accumulates.

Motorists should slow down, allow extra stopping distance and check local road conditions before traveling. Keep headlights on during steady snowfall and watch for quick changes in traction.

Snow will taper late tonight, but slick spots may linger into early Wednesday morning. Additional advisories could be issued if snowfall rates increase.
