Jackson, Mississippi – Elevated fire danger conditions are in place across much of central and western Mississippi Tuesday afternoon, prompting safety reminders from the National Weather Service in Jackson.
According to the National Weather Service, areas including Jackson, Vicksburg, Greenville, Greenwood, and communities along Interstate 55 and Interstate 20 are under a Level 2 (Elevated) fire danger. Officials warn that fires may ignite more easily and could spread more rapidly under current conditions.
Eastern portions of the state, including Meridian and Hattiesburg near Interstate 59 and U.S. Highway 49, are under Level 1 (Limited) fire danger, where extra caution is advised during outdoor burning.
The agency emphasized that open burning is discouraged in elevated risk zones, particularly during the afternoon hours when drier air and wind conditions can increase fire spread potential. Residents are also urged to secure tow chains to prevent roadway sparks and properly dispose of cigarettes.
While no widespread wildfires were reported as of Tuesday afternoon, conditions increase the likelihood that small fires could escape control quickly.
Drivers along major corridors including I-55, I-20, and I-59 may notice dry roadside vegetation, which can heighten fire ignition risks from vehicle-related sparks.
The elevated risk is expected to persist through Tuesday afternoon before conditions improve later in the evening.
Young drivers, outdoor workers, and students traveling during after-school hours should remain mindful of roadside fire hazards.
Officials advise checking local burn restrictions and avoiding unnecessary outdoor flames until conditions moderate.
