Davenport, Iowa – Strong southwest winds and dry conditions are raising fire danger across eastern Iowa and northwest Illinois today, increasing the risk of rapid wildfire spread.

According to the National Weather Service Quad Cities office, breezy to windy conditions with gusts up to 40 mph are expected between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Tuesday. The combination of mild temperatures and dry air will create elevated fire weather conditions across the region.

The highest concern area includes eastern Iowa, northwest Illinois and adjacent northeast Missouri, generally southeast of a line from Dubuque to Cedar Rapids. Officials warn that any grass or brush fires that ignite may spread quickly under gusty southwest winds.

Communities impacted include Davenport, Bettendorf and Clinton along Interstate 80; Moline and Rock Island along Interstate 74; and areas near Interstate 280 and U.S. Highway 61.

Outdoor burning should be avoided. Residents are urged to properly dispose of cigarette butts, secure truck and trailer chains to prevent sparks and avoid using equipment that could generate flames or embers in dry grass.

With dormant winter vegetation and dry surface fuels, fire behavior can intensify rapidly in open fields and along roadways.

The conditions may be especially relevant for commuters, farmers and outdoor workers traveling or operating machinery during the afternoon hours.

Authorities advise reporting any fires immediately to local emergency services.
