Blacksburg, Virginia – Increasing clouds will give way to rain and a mountain rain/snow mix as a clipper system moves into southwest Virginia Wednesday, affecting travel corridors including I-81 and US-460.

According to the US National Weather Service in Blacksburg, dry but cloudier conditions are expected Tuesday ahead of the approaching system. Rain chances increase Wednesday across the region, with a rain and snow mix possible in higher elevations of the mountains.

Mountain communities are forecast to see low temperatures in the 40s Wednesday, while piedmont areas warm into the mid-50s. By Thursday, more widespread rain is expected across southwest and central Virginia, with mountain highs reaching the mid to upper 40s and piedmont areas climbing into the mid to upper 50s.

While no snowfall totals were specified, any mix in higher elevations could create slick spots along elevated stretches of I-81, US-460, and I-77, particularly during periods of steadier precipitation Wednesday afternoon into the evening.

Temperatures Tuesday remain cold, with mountain lows to mid-30s and piedmont highs in the mid-40s before moderating midweek. Above-normal temperatures are expected to continue through the remainder of the week.

Motorists traveling Wednesday and Thursday should monitor road conditions, especially in higher terrain where mixed precipitation may briefly impact visibility.

The midweek system could affect students and commuters during afternoon and evening travel periods.

Officials advise staying updated on local forecasts as conditions evolve through Thursday.
