Boston, Massachusetts – Light snowfall is expected to develop after midnight Wednesday and continue into at least mid-morning, potentially creating slick travel along I-93 and I-95.
According to the US National Weather Service in Boston/Norton, a clipper system passing north of the region will bring accumulating snow across much of Massachusetts, northern Connecticut, and Rhode Island. Snow is forecast to begin after midnight and persist through the morning hours before gradually mixing with, and changing to, rain in lower elevations.
Forecast totals generally range from 1 to 3 inches across eastern Massachusetts and Rhode Island, with 2 to 4 inches possible across higher elevations of central and western Massachusetts, including areas near Worcester along I-290 and Springfield along I-91.
Rising temperatures during the day Wednesday are expected to transition precipitation to rain in lower elevations, limiting additional snow accumulation. However, untreated roads, sidewalks, and bridges may become slippery during the morning commute.
Travel impacts are possible along I-93 in Boston, I-95 through Providence, I-84 near Hartford, and I-91 in western Massachusetts during periods of steady snowfall.
Forecasters note that conditions will improve as temperatures climb and precipitation changes over to rain.
The timing may especially affect students and early commuters across southern New England Wednesday morning.
Officials advise allowing extra travel time and monitoring updated forecasts as the system moves through.
