Albuquerque, N.M. – A warmer-than-normal start to March is shaping up across New Mexico, with mild valley rain and periods of mountain snow possible from Sunday, March 1, through Thursday, March 5.

According to NOAA’s 6-10 day outlook issued Monday, New Mexico is favored to see above-normal temperatures during the March 1-5 stretch, while precipitation trends near to slightly above seasonal averages across parts of the Southwest and southern Rockies. That setup supports rain in lower elevations and snow mainly confined to higher terrain.

In central New Mexico, including Albuquerque and Santa Fe, passing rain showers are the most likely outcome as disturbances move across the region. Periods of steadier rainfall could create slick stretches along Interstate 25 and Interstate 40, particularly during the morning and evening commute.

Farther south, including Las Cruces and Roswell, rain should dominate with mild daytime temperatures limiting any wintry concern. In northwestern areas such as Farmington, rain is also expected to be the primary precipitation type at lower elevations.

In higher terrain, including Taos and Ruidoso, colder air at elevation may support accumulating snow, especially during overnight hours. Mountain travel routes could become slushy or snow-covered at times if heavier bands develop.

Drivers should remain alert for changing conditions in higher elevations and reduced visibility during heavier showers statewide. With temperatures trending above normal in valleys, early March will feel milder than average across much of New Mexico.

Additional refinements are expected later this week as the March 1-5 window approaches.
