Tupelo, Miss. – A warmer-than-normal start to March is lining up for northern Mississippi, with mild air favoring mostly rain from Sunday, March 1, through Thursday, March 5.

According to NOAA’s 6-10 day outlook issued Monday, northern Mississippi is favored to see above-normal temperatures during the March 1-5 stretch, while precipitation trends near to slightly above seasonal averages across the Mid-South. That warmer pattern significantly reduces the likelihood of wintry weather, with rain expected to be the dominant precipitation type.

In northwest Mississippi, including Southaven and Olive Branch near the Tennessee border, passing rain showers are the most likely outcome as systems track across the region. Periods of steadier rainfall could create slick stretches along U.S. 78 and Interstate 55, particularly during peak travel times.

Northeast communities such as Tupelo and Corinth may also see multiple rounds of rain, though temperatures should remain mild enough to prevent any meaningful rain-snow mixing. In central northern areas including Oxford, Starkville and Greenwood, rain is expected to dominate with little to no cold-weather concern.

Drivers should remain alert for reduced visibility and ponding on roadways during heavier showers, especially in low-lying or poor-drainage areas. With temperatures trending above normal, early March will feel more like spring than late winter across much of northern Mississippi.

Additional refinements are expected later this week as the March 1-5 window approaches and system timing becomes clearer.
