Eagle River, Wisconsin – Snowfall rates up to 1 inch per hour could quickly coat highways across Vilas County by midmorning Tuesday, creating slick roads and sharply reduced visibility before the afternoon drive.
According to the National Weather Service in Green Bay, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Tuesday for Vilas County, including Eagle River and Lac Du Flambeau. Forecasters expect 2 to 4 inches of accumulation, with the steadiest snow falling in a 2- to 4-hour window late this morning into early afternoon.
The brief burst of heavier snow, combined with gusty winds, may lower visibility and make travel difficult on Highways 45, 70 and 17, as well as secondary roads across the Northwoods. Snow-covered pavement could develop quickly once rates increase, especially on untreated surfaces and bridges.
Drivers should slow down, increase following distance and allow extra time to reach their destinations. Wisconsin 511 provides updated road conditions statewide.
Snow intensity should ease by midafternoon Tuesday, but plowed surfaces may remain slippery into the evening as temperatures hold below freezing.
