Rabbit Ears Pass, Colo. – Travel over Rabbit Ears Pass could become treacherous beginning at 8 p.m. Tuesday as heavy snow and 50 mph wind gusts target elevations above 9,000 feet.
According to the National Weather Service in Denver, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 8 p.m. Tuesday until midnight Wednesday night for West Jackson and West Grand counties, including Mount Zirkel and Rabbit Ears Pass. Total snow accumulations between 8 and 16 inches are expected, with the heaviest snowfall developing overnight Tuesday and continuing through Wednesday.
Strong winds will create blowing snow and sharply reduced visibility along U.S. Highway 40, particularly near the summit of Rabbit Ears Pass. Snow-packed roads and drifting could trigger traction laws or temporary closures, especially during peak snowfall rates late Tuesday night and again Wednesday afternoon.
The Colorado Department of Transportation advises motorists to monitor cotrip.org and call 511 for real-time road conditions. Drivers should carry chains, emergency supplies and prepare for rapidly changing mountain weather.
Conditions are expected to improve after midnight Wednesday night, but lingering snow and icy stretches may continue into early Thursday. Additional travel advisories are possible as the storm evolves.
