Newburgh, NY – Whiteout conditions are sweeping across the Hudson Valley this afternoon as wind gusts up to 45 mph whip snow across Orange and Putnam counties, cutting visibility below a quarter mile ahead of the evening commute.

According to the National Weather Service in New York, a Blizzard Warning remains in effect until 6 p.m. Monday for both counties. Up to 2 additional inches of snow will combine with strong winds to create blizzard conditions, especially in open and elevated areas.

Travel along Interstate 84 in Orange County and Interstate 684 and the Taconic State Parkway in Putnam County is becoming increasingly hazardous. Blowing snow is reducing visibility rapidly, particularly on bridges and overpasses. Secondary roads in communities including Newburgh, Middletown, Carmel and Brewster are turning slick as drifting snow covers treated pavement.

Gusty winds may bring down tree branches and create isolated power issues, especially where snow has accumulated on limbs. The hazardous conditions are expected to disrupt the Monday evening commute across the region.

Officials urge residents to avoid non-essential travel. If driving is unavoidable, carry a winter survival kit and remain in your vehicle if stranded. Blizzard conditions are expected to ease after 6 p.m., but snow-covered roads and gusty winds may linger into the night.
