Greenville, South Carolina – Mountain roads across western North Carolina will remain snow-covered and slick through midnight, with wind gusts up to 50 mph increasing the risk of falling branches and hazardous travel this evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until midnight EST for Madison, Yancey and Haywood counties, along with areas of Swain County above 3,500 feet. An additional inch of snow is expected in most locations. In Mitchell County, a Winter Storm Warning continues above 3,500 feet where another 1 to 3 inches could fall before midnight. Lower elevations in Mitchell remain under a Winter Weather Advisory.
Communities including Waynesville, Burnsville, Marshall, Spruce Pine and Hot Springs will see snow linger into the late evening. Northwest winds gusting between 45 and 50 mph will create blowing snow on exposed stretches of U.S. 19, U.S. 23 and along the Blue Ridge Parkway. Bridges and overpasses will freeze first and may remain icy into Tuesday morning.
Drivers should slow down, increase following distance and check 511 for updated road conditions. While snowfall tapers overnight, slick spots will likely persist through the Tuesday morning commute.
