Caribou, Maine – Roads across central and northern Maine will remain snow-covered and slick through the early morning hours, with blowing snow cutting visibility for drivers heading out before sunrise Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Caribou, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 7 a.m. Tuesday for Northern Penobscot, Central Penobscot, Southern Piscataquis and Southeast Aroostook counties. An additional 1 to 4 inches of snow is expected, with wind gusts reaching 40 mph overnight.

Communities including Millinocket, Lincoln, Dover-Foxcroft, Houlton and Patten could see bursts of heavier snow this evening before tapering toward daybreak. Gusty winds may cause localized drifting on exposed stretches of Route 11, Interstate 95 near Medway and rural roads across Piscataquis County. The combination of snowfall and wind will create reduced visibility at times, especially in open areas.

Drivers should allow extra travel time for the Tuesday morning commute, keep headlights on in falling snow and check newengland511.org for updated road conditions. While snowfall will wind down after 7 a.m., slick spots could linger through mid-morning as temperatures remain below freezing.
