Boston, Massachusetts – Snow-packed highways and wind gusts topping 80 mph are creating dangerous travel conditions across Massachusetts as crews work to clear more than a foot and in some cases nearly two feet of snow from Sunday’s powerful winter storm.
According to the National Weather Service Weather Prediction Center, Foxborough recorded 21.5 inches of snow, while Barnstable County and parts of Cape Cod saw widespread totals over a foot. The storm intensified along the coast, where Nantucket clocked an 83 mph wind gust. Wellfleet and Barnstable both reached 77 mph, and Martha’s Vineyard reported gusts over 70 mph. Boston Logan International Airport recorded a peak gust of 61 mph.
The combination of heavy, wind-driven snow and powerful gusts reduced visibility to near zero at times Sunday, especially along Route 3, Interstate 93, and stretches of Interstate 95. Blowing and drifting snow continue to impact secondary roads across Plymouth, Bristol, and Norfolk counties.
Utility crews are addressing scattered power outages caused by downed tree limbs, particularly across Cape Cod and the Islands. State officials urge residents to avoid non-essential travel until plows fully clear neighborhood streets and crews restore service.
Additional snowfall reports may be added as local emergency management teams finalize totals. Wind advisories remain in effect through Monday morning in parts of eastern Massachusetts.
