Valparaiso, Indiana – Bursts of lake effect snow are sweeping across Porter County, coating roads and cutting visibility near Lake Michigan as wind gusts approach 35 mph through early evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for Porter County until 6 p.m. CST Monday. An additional 1 to 2 inches of snow is possible, mainly in communities closer to the lake, with gusty onshore winds creating patchy blowing snow.
Drivers along Interstate 94, U.S. 20 and State Road 49 may encounter rapidly changing conditions, especially near Portage, Chesterton and lakefront areas. Bridges and overpasses will turn slick first as temperatures hover near freezing. Visibility can drop quickly under heavier snow bands, then improve just a few miles away.
Officials urge motorists to slow down and allow extra stopping distance. Check 511in.org for the latest road conditions before heading out. Be prepared for sudden visibility changes and drifting snow along open stretches.
Snow showers will continue off and on through late afternoon before easing after sunset. Slick spots may linger into the evening commute as winds gradually diminish.
