Binghamton, NY – Slick roads and gusty winds are creating hazardous travel across central New York and northeast Pennsylvania this morning, with snow continuing to fall during the peak commute and visibility reduced on open highways.
According to the National Weather Service in Binghamton, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until 1 p.m. Monday for Broome, Chenango, Otsego and Steuben counties in New York, along with Bradford and Susquehanna counties in Pennsylvania. Additional snowfall of up to 1 inch is expected in those areas, with wind gusts reaching 35 mph.
Farther south and east, including Sullivan County in New York and Pike and southern Wayne counties in Pennsylvania, another 1 to 3 inches of snow could accumulate before early afternoon. In Lackawanna and Luzerne counties, including Scranton, Wilkes-Barre and Hazleton, up to 2 inches of additional snow is possible with wind gusts as high as 40 mph. Winter storm and blizzard warnings have been canceled, but advisory-level impacts remain.
Interstate 81, Route 17 and I-88 are reporting snow-covered stretches, while PennDOT and NYSDOT crews continue plowing and treating secondary roads. Drivers can check 511NY and 511PA for live road updates.
Officials urge motorists to slow down, increase following distance and allow extra travel time through 1 p.m. Additional advisories could be issued if bands of snow linger into the afternoon.
